* On this day in 1861, Britain annexed Lagos. It would later declare it a British colony in 1862 and establish it as a protectorate

* On this day in 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. It was the first time an atomic bomb was used in warfare. The blast killed more than 70,000 people and destroyed most of the city.

* On this day in 2009, policemen raided a depot in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, owned by Niger Delta militant leader, Alhaji Asari Dokubo. They seized a cache of arms and ammunition including 26 AK-47 rifles.

* On this day in 1926, Gertrude Ederle, an American Olympic swimmer, became the first woman to swim across the English Channel. She performed the feat in a time of 14 hours and 34 minutes.
