The Members of the Nigerian Bar Association’s Section on Public Interest Development Law, NBA-SPIDEL has resolved not to obey or respect the Resolution of the NBA National Executive Council, NBA-NEC, removing the Chairman and Executive Members of the Section.
A former 1st Vice-President of the Nigerian Bar Association and the Chairman of the sacked National Executive Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association’s Section on Public Interest Development Law, NBA-SPIDEL, revealed this on Friday when interviewed by Journalists from Arise TV.
The NBA NEC had in quarterly meeting held at Jos, Plateau State removed the Aikpokpo-Martins led NBA-SPIDEL Executive Committee. The NBA NEC also appointed an interim Committee to manage the affairs of the Section.
But reacting to the issue on Friday Aikpokpo-Martins Told Newsmen that SPIDEL members have decided that he remained the Chairman of the Section as they will not respect the Resolution of the NBA NEC sacking him.
Mr Aikpokpo-Martins described the loggerhead between NBA-SPIDEL and the NBA President as disagreement of the understanding of the workings of the different organs of the NBA.

“The problem we are having is that SPIDEL is not happy with Mr president interfering with the Affairs of SPIDEL because constitutionally, NBA Sections have Uniform bye laws.
The Sections of NBA are somehow insulated from the office of the President.
When asked whether SPIDEL is totally independent of NBA, Aikpokpo-Martins responded that SPIDEL is not independent of the NBA but is independent of the office of the President of the Nigerian Bar Association.
Mr Aikpokpo-Martins argued that SPIDEL is answerable only to Annual General Meeting of the Association and the National Executive Council, NEC.
When asked if he had gone to court to stop NBA President from presiding over NBA-NEC meeting, Mr Aikpokpo-Martins explained that it was SPIDEL members that went to court to prevent NBA-NEC from discussing the issue already filed in court.
When reminded that he was part of the NBA-NEC that took similar decision when Former General Secretary, Madam Joyce Oduah dragged NBA-NEC to court in 2022 with him as the 1st Vice president of the NBA. Aikpokpo-Martins explained that Joyce Oduah was already suspended before she went to court to overturn it.
Madam Oduah had in 2022 sought to stop NBA-NEC from ratifying her purported suspension by the NBA Executive Committee but the NBA-NEC headed by former President Olumide Akpata with John Aikpokpo-Martins as 1st Vice president ignored the court processes and moved NBA-NEC to ratify Madam Oduah’s suspension which was later overturned by the Court.
Mr Aikpokpo-Martins argued that the leadership of SPIDEL as elected in June 2023 remains the leadership of SPIDEL.
