NBA PRESIDENCY: JK GADZAMA, YC MAIKYAU OR JONATHAN TAIDI

The Nigerian Bar Association(NBA) is warming up for a change of the President and it's Executive at the National level later this year, when the tenure of the current President Olumide Akpata led Executive would be coming to an end.

It is the turn of the North to produce the new NBA President later this year. The contenders in the front line seeking to become the next NBA President from the North are already warming up for the D-day.
The Prominent contenders: Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama(SAN), Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau(SAN) and Taidi Jonathan Gunu have been consulting and meeting with their supporters and friends in preparation for the coming election in which none is loosing sleep.

Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama it was learnt, was prevailed upon by some lawyers across board to give the contest another shot. He is seen as the candidate to beat again. Popularly known as JK Gadzama, he was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1986 and was appointed Notary Public in June 1996. He was elevated to the rank of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 1998. His professional experience spans a vast area of Adjectival/Procedural and Substantive law. He has served the NBA in many capacities including as Chairman of NBA Abuja Branch. He is currently a member of NBA Abuja Branch.

Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau(SAN) is another prominent lawyer in the race, popularly known as YC Maikyau(SAN), the outspoken legal practitioner with an imposing physical frame was called to the Bar in 1990 and is currently a member of the Abuja Branch of the NBA. He made a name for himself during the Oputa Panel and he is currently the Chairman of NBA National Welfare Committee.

Jonathan Gunu Taidi Esq, a Non-Silk aspiring for the NBA President position, created a huge upset in 2018 winning a supposedly close race with a wide margin to become the General Secretary.
He was called to the Bar in 2001 and has served the NBA as Chairman and Secretary of NBA Minna Branch.

It is believed that the upcoming NBA President Election is between the two major contenders who are both SANS but considering the spectacular emergence of the current NBA President, Olumide Akpata as the 16th Non-Silk President after years of SANS domination, it is believed from many quarters who are friends and supporters of Taidi that he could spring a surprise by emerging the next NBA President as a Non-Silk.
Akpata took over from Paul Usoro(SAN) as the 30th NBA President in an election that became a National Affair, defeating two Senior Advocates which was made possible as a result of the move spearheaded by Chief Adegboyege Awomolo(SAN) in the last election to prevent a Non-Silk NBA President which backfired.
The major votes gotten by the current NBA President, Olumide Akpata was from the Young Lawyers of Nigeria who wanted a total change in their welfare especially from Senior Lawyers they work for.
This same changes is still been clamoured among the Young Lawyers who are yet to feel the impact of been associated with the Nigerian Bar Association(NBA).

Who are amongst the three prominent contenders can satisfy the yearnings and aspirations of the Young Lawyers?
As the NBA prepares for the all-important poll, lawyers and the rest of the country are anxiously waiting for the 31st President of the Nigerian Bar Association(NBA) and all eyes are on Richard Ayodele Akintunde(SAN), Chairman of this year's Electoral Committee of the NBA(ECNBA).

The question on many lips is if the Akpata Revolution will continue or there will be a return of the Pre-Akpata Presidency status quo of keeping the top-most position among SANS.
